A brief history of separation

The separator has been the workhorse of the dairy industry for over a century. But its history goes back way beyond that.

Separation has been known about for thousands of years. Our ancestors knew that if you let milk stand, it would eventually separate out into milk and cream.

But it wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that the process was mechanised and centrifugal separators became standard equipment at dairies around the world.

Since the days of those first hand-cranked machines, the technology has rapidly developed, while the basic principles behind it have remained the same.

Explore the fascinating history of separators and separation in our short mini-documentary.
